History 256/LAS 252 provides a survey of Modern Latin America from the Wars of Independence through the present day. In this course we will examine the history of region stretching from what is now the Southwest of the United States to the tip of Tierra del Fuego. We are in search of the historical roots of political instability, ethnic conflict, and social inequality that have so vexed its last two centuries.
